What is in store for James-Paul?

I am moving forward. A fashion designer is always ahead of their time. I am also considering working on collaborations with small British designers and working for designers here in the U.S.

Did the show help your career?

It's hard to say, it's too early to judge if it did. At the end of the day its based on the work produced every season. I came in to the show with haute couture and European ready to wear experience. the show was a showcase and should not be taken as a measure of talent and skill, everyone in the competition are at the top of what they do, it was how they used their design aesthetic that was judged.

Any good gossip on her madgesty isaac Mizrahi?

Isaac, his in the limelight so there are no secrets with him, his guidance was quite an honour.

How do you describe your style?

London creates rebellious revolutionaries I learnt to seek in breaking all the rules. And the clothes I make reflects that, I want people to break away from the masses and be an independent thinker, challenge the convention. Following the masses a person fails to see the rights of others, fashion is a tool too challenge convention.

Your inspiration come from?

Bei I pull my inspiration from people. Every single one of us are members of an ethnic group, culture, and sub-cultures that has created conflicts within our societies, all in which has started from the primitive first impressions of each others first contacts. It has has created the superstitious belief of stereotypes, and I wanted to break that idea using clothes and the misconceptions of our relationships be reintroduced in today's society as beautiful differences through fashion.

Do you have a BF?

I am such a hopeless romantic. I came out in London and it has shown me to be who I am. I would not have come out if I stayed in LA, it is not the mainstream thing to be, I needed a culture who celebrated the importance of equality, not only used when its applicable.

Key items every gay man should have?

Clothing with courage, specially for people facing adversity, we get to keep who we are forever, and fashion's influence could be translated into clothes through a simple T-shirt stating our beliefs and opinions, it will not always have a mass appeal and we need to be courageous for that. I do encourage the gay community to give to others what others refuse to give to us when we see it.

What kind of person are you designing for?

I am designing for people who are not easily swayed by branding and marketing. They are independent and consciously aware of where their clothes come from with their purchases and that individuality shines through the clothes I design.

Are you doing menswear ?

Yes I do menswear as well, my menswear are much more about expressing individuality. men are now starting to be more comfortable in expressing masculine diversity in the way men dress. The freedom to express individuality is the greatest luxury.

What advice would you give start up gay designers?

Just do it, you can't judge an idea if you don't do it. Be informed "ALWAYS" in fashion business, be as open as possible, but remember to funnel all your ideas to what works.
